In 2020, Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy developed a program called TakeCHARGE: 5 Steps to Safer Health Care. This public awareness program encourages people to be better prepared were they to become patients. Long before the pandemic, for the past 25 years, Pulse has been on Long Island as an organization promoting the patient’s and family’s role in patient safety and ways to reach the best possible outcomes in medical care. Now, with healthcare professionals overworked and stretched to their limit, people need  more than ever to be better prepared as patients and not to count on healthcare professionals to get it right 100% of the time.

Medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the United States, causing as many as 400,000 deaths per year. Though healthcare organizations such as hospitals, professional associations and universities focus on patient safety education, errors are in most cases caused at the bedside and affect patients and their loved ones directly. By being more responsible and planning  ahead, patients truly reduce their chances of harm from wrong diagnosis, incorrect medication, surgical errors and infection. That’s why Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy (CPSEA) has focused on educating the public in patient safety.

Now we have developed a campaign to educate the public and corporate America about the importance of the patient’s involvement in patient safety. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ), patients who are more involved in their healthcare get better results.

Through the pandemic, Pulse has grown tremendously and TakeCHARGE now has thirteen organizations throughout the country participating in leading the “charge” including The Joint Commission,, Greater National Advocates, Washington Patient Safety Coalition  and many more.

Our goal is to reach audiences and do virtual presentations on the 5 Steps both locally and nationally, and we plan for a virtual TakeCHARGE conference in March 2022 for Board Certified Patient Advocates

TakeCHARGE was developed in part by interns and we hope there are those who would be willing to participate in helping it grow.
